Q.Can you suggest any nonprescription aid for sinus headache related to high pollen count? I’ve had this headache on and off for about a week and a half. It’s worse in the morning. There’s lots of pressure. I don’t get drainage from the nose, although there’s some sneezing.

B.T.

A. It sounds as if you have a condition called seasonal allergic rhinitis. Sinus pressure is a common associated symptom. The sinus headache you describe is caused by swelling in the nose and sinuses triggered by allergy-producing substances in the environment. If you cannot avoid the pollen that triggers your symptoms, a trial of medications is the next step.

A number of over-the-counter medications can be very helpful, though some of the best drugs are prescription medications. The major classes of over-the-counter medications for your symptoms include antihistamines, decongestants and pain relievers. Keep in mind that many preparations are combinations of two or more classes of medicines. It’s important to consider both the beneficial effects and the side effects of the various medicines when deciding what to take.

Although antihistamines such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) do not directly relieve sinus pressure, they can reduce sneezing, itching and the “wet” symptoms of pollen allergy — such as watery eyes and runny nose. The primary side effects of these medications include sedation, excessive mucous membrane dryness and potential aggravation of prostate problems or glaucoma. Try a few different products one at a time to see if any of them works well for you. After prolonged use of a drug, your body may become tolerant to it, and it may not continue to work well for you. If this happens, try changing to a different antihistamine.

Decongestants such as Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) constrict blood vessels and thus decrease the swelling in the nose and sinuses. These drugs can help unblock these passages and relieve the symptoms of sinus pressure that you describe. The primary side effects include insomnia, increased blood pressure, decreased appetite and cross-reactions with other drugs, especially antidepressants.

The most effective decongestants are topical nose sprays such as Afrin or Neo-Synephrine. Topical decongestants should not be used for more than two days, however. Longer use can result in a rebound effect, with worse swelling and irritation once you stop using the sprays.

Pain relievers can also relieve your headache, and they are a common addition to many over-the-counter allergy preparations. Tylenol (acetaminophen), Advil (ibuprofen) and aspirin can all be helpful. Each of these may have varying effectiveness, depending on your response to them, and they should be taken according to your doctor’s directions or those on the package.

If your headache persists, visit an allergist or otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist) for a complete evaluation and to see if you would benefit from a prescription medication. Several new prescription antihistamines are much less likely to cause drowsiness than the over-the-counter drugs. Another prescription medication that may work well to treat your symptoms is a nasal steroid spray. These sprays have few side effects and provide long-term relief of symptoms by blocking the inflammation associated with allergies.

It’s at this time possible to obtain drugs on the Internet plus many individuals have taken advantage of it. Our pharmacy no prescription is a perfect store for people to get their cheap generic medicines.

While it’s very important to choose the correct thermometer for your home first aid kit, it can be a challenge. Thanks to developments in health technologies, consumers can select from a wide range of thermometers. Here, we will teach you about the most common types of thermometers currently on the market.

A trip to your area health care store or pharmacy will show that you can find a range of thermometers on the market. If you are sick, it’s vital that you are aware of your body temperature. Should you get a fever, you need to take certain steps to make sure that you stay safe. There are other reasons for monitoring body temperature besides feeling sick. Often it is tested in people who might be victims of hypothermia as a result of prolonged exposure to the cold and heat, as well as women who want to get pregnant and need to take a body temperature reading to determine if they are ovulating. It doesn’t matter why you need take your temperature, what is important is knowing what type of thermometers are available so you can purchase one that suites your preferences and requirements. A classic glass thermometer is the first type of thermometer that you can select from. Currently, it’s unusual to find these because of the health concerns that can occur should they break due to the mercury that’s inside these items. You really shouldn’t buy these. You should get rid of this item if it’s in your home first aid kit. You should use an electronic thermometer. Hence, you can employ a digital thermometer in the same places you’d use a regular thermometer – under the tongue, in the anus, and even in the underarm. Once it has been placed in or near the body for a certain amount of time, you will be able to see the temperature displayed in a window. Once the device obtains a suitable reading, it will start to beep.

These are the two thermometers that are most recommended by parents for those who want to take the body temperature of an infant or a young child. These include pacifier and ear thermometers. While a pacifier thermometer is very easy to use with infants, it produces readings that aren’t very accurate. It is easily put in the child’s mouth like a typical pacifier and it gives a general reading. A temperature reading can be obtained using a digital ear thermometer by placing a small portion of the unit up against the ear. There are several different kinds designed for kids and adults.

Another type of thermometer that can be bought is one that is placed on the forehead. They are made up of a piece of plastic or film that is easily placed on the head and gives a reading of the general temperature. It’s been discovered that these units work, but they aren’t as accurate as digital versions. Ear thermometers are more accurate. A disposable thermometer is a good choice for hygienic reasons. A temperature reading can be obtained with these plastic devices by laying them on the skin. After you buy these, you can throw that piece away. As you can tell, there is a vast amount of thermometers that can be bought. If you can afford to add a digital thermometer to your home first aid kit, it provides the greatest degree of accuracy.
